My Journey

TrailKube didn’t start as a business. It started growing out of my own experiences, ups and downs as I made my way through the countryside, here in the UK and, later on, in wilder places around the world.

I was never really into going any faster. I just wanted to see how far I could go, what I was capable of achieving. I wasn’t going to set the world alight for anyone – except maybe myself. I was happy with putting one foot in front of the other and seeing where it led to. I’d been in a pretty dark place for years, and running began lifting that shroud.

And over time, sooner than I had expected, running became more than just running. It became a way of exploring — places, challenges, and, let’s be honest, myself as well. My horizons were expanding, my life was becoming, and continues to become, richer in so many ways. On some days that looks like a long trail in the middle of nowhere, or exploring the local countryside, on my doorstep. Other days it’s a short session squeezed in around everything else life throws at you.

That’s how it is for me.

This isn’t about being elite. That’s something I never was and never will be. It’s about being curious. About figuring things out as you go. About getting things wrong, learning from it, and trying again.

And yes, there’s a little more to my story than running.

At one point, things weren’t as straightforward as they might seem now. I was drinker, of alcoholic tendencies. Twenty plus years thrown away, which I subsequently wrote about that in my first book, Losing My Addiction . That is a very different kind of journey, but one that has shaped how I approach challenges, setbacks, and developed my own idea of moving forward.

Running didn’t fix everything. But it became a big part of the process.

And over time, it all started to come together for me. Quitting the drink gave me far more than I could have imagined, and running added layer upon layer over that sense of “more”.

Eventually, TrailKube grew out of that. As well as, basically, my running mishaps!

Not just as a product, but as a place to share what actually helps — the training, the kit, the races, and the small things that make a big difference over time.

None of it is perfect. It’s all evolving, and always will.

So, if you’re someone who’s looking at this world and thinking “maybe… could I?” — then you’re exactly where you need to be.
